What's a better Valentine's Day movie than the classic Shakespearean adaptation 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU? A 90s retelling of
The Taming of the Shrew, 10 THINGS stars Julia Stiles as Kat Strattford, a prickly, feminist high school senior who refuses to date. When her younger sister Bianca wants to date Joey, the hot popular guy, their strict father institutes a new rule: Bianca can date...when Kat does. What follows is an elaborate scheme where naïve, sweet Cameron (a young Joseph Gordon-Levitt) convinces Joey to pay scary bad-boy Patrick (the late Heath Ledger) to take Kat out, thus freeing up Bianca for suitors. This film has it all: a great cast (Allison Janney, Larry Miller, the aforementioned handsome Heath Ledger), an arguably greater soundtrack (Letters to Cleo, "F.N.T." by Semisonic), and a downright romantic paintball scene. "10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU can and should be viewed as the ultimate teen movie, bursting through the hellish decade to say a little more about the empowering potential of those defining years.
