Making Your Own Handmade Seed Paper with Evelyn Wong – A Center for Book & Print Event

Now is a great time to be thinking about storing dried seeds to plant next year, and making your own seed paper is a fun and creative way to do it! This workshop will show you how to make beautiful handmade paper embedded with seeds for plants that you’ll find growing right here in Maine. We’ll create pulp from cotton fibers and recycled papers, and beautiful botanical inclusions. Once you learn how to make seed paper, you will find that the possibilities for making your own handmade papers are endless–from crafting beautiful cards to invitations, tags, stationery, gifts, books, and more! Join us for a fun workshop for all ages and be prepared to get messy!

Participants should bring: a heavy apron (preferably waterproof) and clothes that can get wet/messy, non-slip shoes, 2 large clean towels per person (can be old bath towels, beach towels)

Participants can bring: their own mould & deckle if they have one, dried and clean pressed flowers and leaves, dried seeds of native Maine plants

Notes for participants: This workshop requires a lot of standing and moving around. Please come prepared!

Evelyn Wong is an interdisciplinary artist exploring themes of history, trauma, culture, race, and gender through the lens of personal narratives as well as her Asian American heritage.  She has recently exhibited work at the Northern Arizona University Art Museum in Flagstaff, Arizona, the Portland Museum of Art in Portland, Maine, and the Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco, California.  Residencies include The Studios at MASS MoCA and the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation Artist’s Residency Program.  Wong received her BFA from the University of South Carolina and MFA from Maine College of Art. In 2019, she was awarded the Professional Development and Creative Entrepreneurship Grant at Maine College of Art to launch Fireball Bookbindery, where she currently crafts hand-bound journals and notebooks inspired by Asian traditions in materials, designs, and book-bindings.
