Seemingly out of almost nowhere, LA LA LAND swept to 14 Oscar nominations, including a Best Director statue won by Damien Chazelle, making him the youngest such winner in history, a rags-to-riches story seemingly echoing that of the film’s protagonists, an aspiring young actress and unaspiring jazz pianist whose lives seem to miraculously turn into a technicolor ‘50s musical. Emma Stone also took home an Oscar, co-starring with Ryan Gosling. It’s a film that demands the big screen!
