Driving Madeleine focuses on a taxi ride across Paris. It evolves into a profound meditation on the realities of the distraught driver and his fare Madeleine–a 92-year-old woman with her shockingly rich and tragic past. Cash-strapped Charles sees a quick, lucrative ride as an opportunity to cut his mounting debt. Madeleine is moving into an elder care home and wants to make some stops along the way, predicting that this might be her last ride through the city. Initially reluctant, Charles agrees to keep the meter running and gradually becomes fascinated by the stories she tells about the people, the places, and events of her life. We see many films as we go through the selection process. Most are pretty good and offer a variety of admirable qualities in how they tell their stories, but few so thoroughly touch our hearts and make us “fall in love” with the story it tells. This one did that.
In French with English subtitles.
