A Golden Globe nominee for Best Picture,
September 5 is based on events that rocked the world at and from the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics, transfixing over a billion viewers around the world. An ABC News sports broadcasting team in charge of covering the Summer Olympics is caught off guard with the rest of the world when militants infiltrate the Olympic Village and take members of the Israeli Olympic Team hostage, demanding the release of hundreds of prisoners held in Israel. As the sports broadcast rapidly develops into real-time coverage of the hostage crisis, the newspeople and their translator are forced to question whether their participation in broadcasting the event is more harmful than helpful. Utilizing archival footage from the 1972 broadcast,
September 5 is a docu-thriller that is "tough, rough, messy and gritty, in the tradition of American cinema from the decade in which it takes place"—Kyle Smith,
Wall Street Journal.
