Art&: Titian, Thompson, and Mythmaking

Join us for a virtual conversation about two ground-breaking exhibitions on view this fall in New England museums. Like many American painters of his generation, Bob Thompson (1937–1966) sought inspiration in mythological subjects. In Thompson’s case, this meant reinterpreting compositions such as Titian’s Perseus and Andromeda (1554­–56), which is currently on view in the United States for the first time as part of the exhibition Titian: Women, Myth & Power at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Organized in connection with the special exhibition, Bob Thompson: This House Is Mine, this conversation features Kerill O’Neill, Julian D. Taylor Professor of Classics at Colby College, Nathaniel Silver, William and Lia Poorvu Curator of the Collection at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and Diana Tuite, Katz Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Colby College Museum of Art.

This program is the first in a three-week series of talks that connect to the exhibition Bob Thompson: This House Is Mine.

The Art& series brings together visiting artists, scholars, museum staff, and community experts for conversations about exhibitions, collections, and projects at the Colby College Museum of Art and its Lunder Institute for American Art. A mix of in-person, virtual, and hybrid programs, this series is designed for those interested in learning more about art and engaging with the key issues of our time.
