Welton Academy is an all-boys preparatory school known for its high standards and long-running traditions, and the boys enrolled there are expected to rigidly adhere to its standards. Todd Anderson (Ethan Hawke) begins his junior year at Welton, rooming with one of the highest performing seniors, Neil Perry (Robert Sean Leonard). The two are surprised by the unorthodox teaching methods of their new English teacher John Keating (Robin Williams), who understands the pressure the boys face from the school and their parents and encourages them to look at life differently. Aware of the headmaster’s watchful eye, Todd, Neil, and their friends challenge the expectations of Welton and their parents and attempt to live by their own needs and desires.
