Join Waterville Creates and Third Act for an inspiring evening with renowned artist Robert Shetterly. As the founder of Americans Who Tell the Truth, Shetterly has spent over 20 years painting portraits of individuals who exemplify courageous citizenship, capturing the stories of those who have made a lasting impact on society. With a collection of approximately 280 portraits, his work challenges us to reflect on what it means to be civically engaged.
During this special event, Shetterly will highlight the stories of environmental activists who have sparked meaningful change—both globally and in our own communities. Join us for an evening of powerful storytelling, art, and inspiration as we explore how each of us can make a difference.
Americans Who Tell the Truth
What began in 2002 as artist Robert Shetterly’s personal portrait project has become a broad-based, not-for-profit arts and education organization, the mission of which is to foster and inspire “a profound sense of citizenship” by exposing students at all levels to portraits, quotes, biographies, and related resources built around these “Models of Courageous Citizenship.”
With the platform provided by the organization, the portraits and Robert Shetterly have participated in hundreds of events, presentations, and exhibitions. To date, Shetterly and his portraits have been invited into grammar schools, high schools, and colleges in 40 states and Washington, D.C.
Third Act
In September 2021, well-known environmentalist Bill McKibben started Third Act. It is a way for Americans over sixty to use their experience and resources to safeguard our climate and democracy. Third Act is making the world a better place. Third Act Maine was founded in 2022. It has grown into a statewide working group with five geographic hubs: Greater Portland, Mid-coast, Waterville area, Western Mountain and Lincoln County.
