One night, Rita is kidnapped by ruthless cartel lord "Manitas" del Monte (Karla Sofia Gascón), who seeks to fake their own death, undergo gender affirming surgery, and start a new life as a woman. Reemerging into society as Emilia Pérez, the former cartel leader hopes to reunite with her children and wife Jessi (Selena Gomez), who have no idea that she is still alive.
