Almost a quarter of the way through this century, Charlie Kaufman looks like the smartest, craziest, funniest, deepest, best screenwriter the 21st has produced. From ADAPTATION to ANOMALISA, from BEING JOHN MALKOVICH to SYNECHDOCHE NEW YORK, Kaufman-written (and sometimes directed) films are as distinctive, mind-blowing and just plain entertaining as imaginable—or unimaginable, unless you were Kaufman. Perhaps best of all was ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, the Jim Carry and Kate Winslet-starring comedy that centers on a couple who decide to have their brains erased of memories of each other after their relationship goes south. Spoiler: Not that easy.
