If you wrote off Magic Mike in 2012 because you thought it was a frothy, superficial chick flick, now is your chance to watch Steven Soderbergh's sensitively-directed film and change your mind. Channing Tatum both produced and starred in this film, loosely based off his own short stint as a male stripper in Tampa before his acting career took off. Tatum plays Mike, an experienced erotic dancer who takes a talented youngster, Alex (whom he nicknames The Kid) under his wing. Soderbergh's direction takes us from Mike's perspective– an almost-30 blue-collar stripper who dreams of selling his own bespoke furniture– to Alex's perspective: a volatile young man falling into the excesses of the entertainment world. Matthew McConaughey as the dance group's leader Dallas is magnetic, and the choreography is not to be missed. If nothing else, "Tatum's buttocks probably affect the tides" –
The Guardian. See this film for date night (or ladies' night) before seeing the third installment,
Magic Mike's Last Dance, in theaters soon.
