According to its original 1947 New York Times review, Miracle on 34th Street is "the freshest little picture in a long time." Macy's department store, the epicenter of the holiday shopping season, hires a man who calls himself Kris Kringle to be their Santa Claus. Is he the real deal, or should he be confined by the state for his own mental health? Played by Edmund Gwenn, Kris Kringle sets out to change the hearts and minds of New York City, and specifically, a little girl whose mother (Maureen O'Hara) has taught her that Santa Claus is not real. This warm-hearted film pushes back against American consumerism, asking what we gain from our tireless pursuit of proof.
