In 1934 London, Jimmy Erskine (Academy Award nominee Sir Ian McKellen)—a longtime critic for the Daily Chronicle—is known for his scathing reviews and cutting comments. When his new editor David Brooke (Mark Strong) threatens to fire Jimmy unless he tones it down, Jimmy fashions a plan to use David's interest in struggling actress Nina Land (Gemma Arterton) to his advantage.
