In a remote village on the island of Carpathia, children are raised to fear a secretive species called ochi. The ochi, believed to be the cause behind the disappearance of farm animals, are actively hunted by the village's protector Maxim (Willem Dafoe) and his group of child enforcers. But when Maxim's daughter Yuri (Helena Zengel)—who doesn't support the hunting of ochi—discovers a wounded baby ochi has been left behind, she escapes on a quest to bring him home. As Yuri bonds with the baby ochi and teams up with ochi researcher Dasha (Emily Watson), she must avoid the pursuit of her father and his young disciple Petro (Finn Wolfhard). “
The Legend of Ochi, the rare A24 family film, is a charming throwback to adventure movies of the '80s like
The Neverending Story and
The Dark Crystal, complete with original puppetry that reportedly contains not an ounce of CGI manipulation"—Brian Tallerico,
