A remake of the 1993 film,
The Wedding Banquet may just be the best feel-good movie of the year. Min (Han Gi-chan), an art teacher with a wealthy and disappointed family, lives with his commitment-phobic boyfriend Chris (Bowen Yang) in the garage owned by their lesbian friends Angela (Kelly Marie Tran) and Lee (Lily Gladstone). With Min's visa set to expire and Chris hesitant about marrying him so he can get a green card, Min devises a proposal: he will marry Angela to get his green card, and in return he will pay her so she and Lee can attempt in vitro fertilization. Min's already shaky plan is upended, however, when his grandmother (Academy Award-winner Youn Yuh-jung) arrives in the United States to surprise everyone with an extravagant Korean wedding banquet. "The entire ensemble is top-notch, allowing beloved actors like Gladstone and Yang to do something slightly different from their usual fare. With universal themes told in a specific way and special care to highlight the challenges and triumphs of motherhood,
The Wedding Banquet will hit especially hard for queer and AAPI audiences but is sure to be a crowd-pleaser for all"—Taylor Gates,
